Because storms are a major cause of power outages, KUB continuously monitors weather conditions through the use of Doppler radar and communication with TVA and other utilities. When the threat of bad weather exists, KUB takes extra precautions to ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained to respond to any outages that may occur.

KUB is on call 24 hours a day for utility emergencies. If you experience an outage, report it to KUB by calling 524-2911 or call our automated system by dialing 1-800-250-8068 from a touch-tone phone. Do not e-mail power outages or have someone else e-mail them for you. E-mail is for non-emergency requests, and responses are available only during normal work hours.

If you see a downed power line, stay away from it and report it to KUB immediately.

Be prepared for storm season and the potential for power outages. Keep emergency supplies on hand such as batteries, flashlights, a battery-operated radio, nonperishable food items, bottled water, and a cell phone or single line phone (cordless phones don't work without electricity).

Restoration Order

When an outage occurs, KUB immediately begins outage assessment. KUB cannot respond to every outage at once, so it categorizes the size of the outage and services impacted to create the most effective and efficient plan. During a typical outage, KUB will determine the order of restoration in the following sequence:
  • Critical system loads that include communications systems, water/wastewater pump stations, hospitals, and other services vital to public welfare.
  • Transmission lines (the backbone of the electric system) serving larger numbers of customers.
  • Substation equipment that can impact large numbers as well.
  • Distribution lines serving subdivisions, large housing areas, and commercial areas.
  • Service lines and transformers that serve small numbers of customers.
  • Service lines and transformers serving individual customers.
